Just £220 will provide ALL THE BASIC NEEDS for a child for 1 WHOLE YEAR!
Formed in 2005, the idea of setting up a girl’s boarding school was inspired by a local Aalim (Senior Teacher educated at Darul Uloom, Delhi) by the success of a newly established small boys madressa and 2 Leicester business partners who were looking for a Sadaqah-e-Jariyah project to benefit disadvantaged children for the reward of their deceased relatives.
The Aalim when returning back to the village of Gangasagar after graduating in 2003 noticed the decline of local Muslim community and lack of basic facilities for prayers and education.
Young girls are especially disadvantaged due to extreme poverty or cultural reasons they are only given the minimum state education and often forced into an early marriage or agricultural labouring jobs usually involving hard labour.
With mortality rates amongst adults in the region being higher than normal, orphan children, especially young girls have little or no prospects and are extremely vulnerable. Currently 70% of the girls being cared for are orphans and the 30% come from a poor family who cant afford to care of their needs.
The girls boarding school is run by a total of 20 salaried staff:
10 Aalimas (Senior Female Teachers)
6 Ustaads (Teachers)
Also known an Gangasagar, an island located 95 miles south of Kolkata (West Bengal, India) in the Bay of Bengal.
Covers a land mass of just over 224km2 (approximately 10 miles across). It has 43 villages and a population of over 160,000 (Census 2011). The largest village is called Gangasagar which is where the girls educational institution is based.
The island is largely rural and due to its remote location faces a number of economic, logistical and climatic challenges with excessive rain and cyclones throughout the year.
Literacy and employment levels are lower compared to other more developed regions of India and most of the employed workforce are either cultivators of land (owners or co-owners) for rice, fish, fruit and vegetable or agricultural labourers.
