Beekeeping has a long tradition in Africa, but is not commonly practiced as a commercial activity because of the lack of resources and training.
Through bee-keeping we are able to provide an income for people who are living on average less than 60p a day. It also enables the community to preserve the forests, as trees are used for beehives. Additional income will be used for buying more beehives to enhance honey production.
We aim to encourage Honey farming (Bee Keeping) as this has multiple benefits.
Two villages were chosen to pilot the project. An initiation ceremony took place. Bee-keeping training was provided to each village. This covered the usage of equipment, clothings and construction of the bee sheds. Colonized bee hives will be transferred from the forests into the bee apiaries (sheds). The two sites Namwala and Nangapoche respectively have 10 Bee Hives & 2 Catcher Hives each.
As well as an extra source of food, most of the honey would provide additional income, which would be used to maintain the beehives and suits, and to pay for extra beehives.
